Exactly. Of the players who can play somewhere around 3.0, how many of them became that strong because of money? I would guess zero to few. I think Stick's point is that for him to make the journey to 2.0, he would need a sizable financial incentive. That probably won't happen and he doesn't want to make the effort without it. That's his choice and I understand and respect it. When someone finds the motivation without the financial incentive, it will happen.

A player can say, "I could do it." But, if they can't find the motivation, they can't do it. As MCG states in the article, not only is motivation a part of the equation, it is the most important part. If you have all of the ingredients except motivation, you will not make progress. This is also the reason almost everyone who is not elite is stagnant as well.
