Hitting loose with 8/4* clearly wins the most games since Blue is significantly behind in the race and is not well-positioned to contain White's checker without hitting.

Hitting will also lose more gammons than playing safe. At GS this is a difficult decision. The trouble is that I don't see a good alternative way of playing the 31. Pulling up the 9pt gives White's blot more ways to escape. Breaking the 15pt leaves 6 indirect shots. Making the 2pt doesn't accomplish anything that hitting doesn't.

So I'm back to hitting. I think White's open 4pt is enough of a weakness to make hitting right here. If this is correct then I'd be curious to see how much White's board needs to be strengthened to make some other play float to the top.
