Federer's main motivation is obviously not the money. I think that you and many others are confusing the fact that the main motivation is not the money with the fact that money enables people to follow their passion when they might not be able to otherwise.

If there were $0 in tennis, Federer would not be as good as he is now. He wouldn't have the coaches, the competition to hone his skills against, and probably not the time to devote all his attention to it.

My day job is a mathematician. Mathematicians don't do mathematics research for the money. But the existence of enough money to sustain a professional community enables all mathematicians to perform at a much higher level than they would be able to if there were no money.
