Blue should be able to run off the gammon as long as he doesn't have a second checker sent back. Yes, a second checker gives the chance of an anchor and an ace point game, but blue is only 11/36 to enter and then only ~15% or so to win the ensuing game. Not very good odds.

I think I'll just minimize shots with 7/1 7/5. Maybe i can make the 5, hit something and contain it.
