What I don't agree with is the mentality that an individual can play 2.0 if he just tries harder. He probably just can't, or he would have done it already.

This I agree with. Well, of course, if someone is close to 2.0 and is still improving, then there's still hope, but I know that's not what you meant.

Also, in chess, a team of assistants and computer analysts is useful largely for preparing opening novelties and practicing specific positions.

I agree that a team of assistants is probably more useful in chess than in backgammon. However, I still think that a team could be useful for preparing a library of reference positions for the pro to study. Let's say the pro identifies a weakness in his game and wants to nail it down. A sufficiently competent assistant can then go off and analyze the position, varying it in many different ways and distilling much of the information into a small set of key reference positions. Meanwhile the pro can focus on studying yesterday's reference positions to make sure he knows them like the back of his hand—playing them out, perhaps, or making further explorations and adjustments to the positions.

Another benefit to most people is that simply having a trainer who can design a training schedule and keep the player accountable to it will improve the player's discipline. Also, it's a well-known principle that the best way to lodge facts into your long-term memory is to review the material at certain intervals, preferably just at the point where you're almost forgetting it. A good trainer can track your review schedule for you.
