Why think that a backgammon assistant could only be used in the same way as chess assistant?
I am sure that a very top player, say for example the number one giant has parts of his game that are not as good as top players, say giants 30 - 40, and could benefit from assistance if there was a serious push to break the 2.0 barrier.
