Memorizing reference positions

There are a lot of smart people who play backgammon (and other games like chess, Go, etc.), many much smarter than I, but most of them suck.
Sometimes, it's just impossible to predict who would be good at what. Professional sports prospects bust all the time and they are actually alive and playing the game they are supposed to be good at. Von Neumann probably had the best skillset of any prospect, so by that measure, he would have as good a chance of anyone at accomplishing whatever goal it is. Although, in many cases academics are accustomed to logic and determinism and find themselves ill-equipped to handle randomness and a plethora of positions.
I think there is sufficient knowledge and information available such that a near-optimal human player could average around 2.0. Someday there may be enough information available such that a human can average under 1.0 (or whatever), though I don't think that is the case at present.
