You've changed the question. Your original question was how many positions it was humanly possible to remember. Now you're asking how many positions a normal human / top backgammon player can remember. And apparently, you're restricting yourself to current players, and basing your estimate on what they actually remember, not what they could remember if they had to. Furthermore it also seems that you're also implicitly asking how many positions it does you any good to remember, which was also not part of your original question.
