How well do you actually know those positions? Do you know the equity, win rate, gammon rate for all of those positions? Or do you just know the correct play?
I know the equity for very few of these positions. Offhand I'd figure I know the equity for the holding games and early game blitz reference positions but not the rest for the most part. I know the win/gammon breakdown for a good amount of them and the correct decision for all where it's what I'm concerned with. It seems like you discount a reference position if you 'just' know the correct play whereas I find, esp. in the early game, that knowing one position is highly applicable to another. An easy example is how do you play a 54 after an opening 61 by your opponent?

I know going in that the two plays are very close and that splitting is ever so slightly ahead according to rollouts. That means when this position comes up: (31P-61P-54)

I would have no issue figuring out the best play thanks to the second roll position. I avoid possibly making a rather big mistake thanks to the simple reference position.
