There is no specific rule allowing or barring the recording of positions.<.i>

Why not?

the consensus is that inobtrusive recording of positions is allowedThen why is there no rule that inobtrusive recording of positions is allowed?

And if that's the consensus, why does it "certainly" make sense that one should ask opponent's permission to record a position? Or, apparently, that one shouldn't record positions if opponent objects? Sorry, none of that "certainly" makes sense to me.

What would make sense to me is a rule that states that a player may videotape a match and, with notice to opponent, may (in a clocked match) manually record or photograph a position and, with notice to opponent, may permit a competent third party to manually record a match.

There is no complelling 'need' to record your positions if your opponent objects.

Well, there's no compelling "need" to object to recording a position. But there is a motivating interest in having a record of one's one match, or of interesting positions that may arise in one's own match.
