I fail to see why you mention AtS since we are talking about NMS with a 2 cube turned which probably won't get a redouble/take in most variations.

He's got 6 checkers off with a huge race lead (despite the horrible distribution), so you can't just be on your way closing out his one checker. What's likely to happen in this scenario is he'll probably run off the bar at some point during your bear off and have a decent chance to win.

If you manage to kick around 2 of his checkers, you lock up your winning chances (either too good to redouble or you can cash at some point) and your gammons go way up.

Thats my amateurish point of view.
