In Response To: New U.S. Rules ratified (Chuck Bower)

In Las Vegas last month I had one opponent object to me recording our match. Being a nice guy (or was I a schmuck?) I put the camera away and we played on. Later I asked Howard about the request and he said he would have ruled in favor of the objection to the recording -- I don't know if he would always feel this way or was only deferring to the relative prominences of the two players. In any event, I think it a bad precedent. I have talked to a large number of players, including some very prominent, since and, without exception, all thought recording should be allowed.

Malcolm thought I erred by stating at the beginning, being the nice guy that I am, the courteous "I hope you don't mind that I record the match". The opponent stated he did mind. And I didn't argue. Malcolm thought I should have not said a word and just hit 'record'. Everything was in place and ready to record when the opponent came to the table.

I think Chuck's reasons are conclusive and exhaustive -- can there be more?

Also, when I first got my equipment and was still perfecting my routine of recording, downloading to the computer, transferring to Snowie, etc. I volunteered to record the Kazaross/Munitz Denver ABT final. They both consented, obviously, and I later sent both of them copies of the file. Several others asked for copies; however, I asked Neil and Richard if they had objections before I gave the file to the others -- I think that the correct and courteous action. Even with my own matches I would not give out a copy of the file to a third party, if asked, unless I first checked with my opponent.
