This is correct.
This is a 48-player bracket that was provided to us by Patrick Gibson via Butch Meese. I like it- other than having to explain to every player six times how it works.
In a nutshell...
play boils down to three undefeateds and three one-loss players. Everybody else, with two losses, goes to 'consolation'- they cannot win the main prize, but, 4 of the 6 places are paid from consolation as only the final match of the main does not have the loser drop down into consolation.
so, of the six survivors (three undefeated and three one-loss), via a random draw, one undefeated player is chosen to play one one-loss player. the other matchups are undefeated vs. undefeated and one-loss vs. one-loss.... so depending on who wins the undefeated vs. one-loss matchup you will have either 1 undefeated and 4 one-loss players, or 2 undefeated and 2 one-loss players. In OPEN we had the first scenario, so the lone undefeated, Mel Leifer, was guaranteed at least 2nd place at that point. In the ADVANCED, we had the second scenario, so the 2 undefeated have cashed (in the 6-payout scenario -no worse than 3/4 Consolation) but aren't in the finals yet. (They play each other and the winner is in the finals and guaranteed at least second in the main. if the loser crashes and burns they still get a 3/4 Consolation slot).
The printed bracket sheet has alternative brackets in the 'main' and in the remainder of 'consolation' for each of the above two scenarios- you simply cross out the scenario that doesn't apply with a marker.
We could have equitably paid out 3, 4 or 6 places- always 2 in the main, and then in the Conso we could have paid 1 only (which would have caused a revolt), or 2 only, winner and runner-up, (which may have caused a mutiny), or 4 in the consolation, which we did... 6 out of 41 was a nice ratio for the OPEN and while 6 out of 34 in ADVANCED may be a tad higher than normal, we thought 4 out of 34 to be a little low.
