I think the main point is that hitting the second checker HUGELY increases your winning chances. On the other hand, breaking your 6pt doesn't cost as much as you seem to think it does. You're very unlikely to get off the gammon here just by racing your checkers around, so losing ground in the race isn't a big deal if you thereby increase your chances of picking up the second checker. So yes, you're prepared to sacrifice the asset of your 6pt if it increases your chances of picking up the second checker.
