I don't think it is as cut and dry as that

The situations are similar. The situations are also dissimilar in that the situation that arose was actually listed as a specific example of an illegal move in the new Simborg/Bower/Horton rules.

I am not going to debate every possible hypothetical situation. I am not trying to convince anyone that the actual ruling leaving two checkers of different colors is the correct or best ruling. I am simply trying to plead a case that the ruling is not without merit, and it is not devoid of common sense.

Player A has played in over 30 events in the USBGF database (which only goes back to 2009) and has supposedly been playing for 20-30 years. (I cannot verify that). Player B had played in 2 events prior to this tournament. Perhaps if Player A had mastered the fine art of putting a hit checker on the bar, all this could have been avoided. The irony is that after the ruling, Player B acquiesced and allowed Player A to put the checker on the bar.

And the reason I won't engage in a never-ending debate is that this will be a moot point for me because all tournaments that I direct from now on, including our local Sunday tournaments, will be legal moves.

End of thread for me. Y'all can debate it all you want.
