Hmmm...I missed 3/2*/1/off 1/off. But I think you're right that it isn't better than 3/2* 3/off. It gives White the same number of rolls that fail to get off the backgammon immediately (11 41 51 42), and it may reblot if White dances. On the other hand it lets White get off the gammon with a 3 rather than a 2 and a 3 is a slightly better racing roll. But I don't think this is enough to compensate for the extra 2 hitters.
