The advantage of a few more hits back doesn't sound like too big a deal to me, considering that if we are hit, our chance of winning going forward has just fallen over a cliff anyway. However, it might be what Marty Storer calls a "viglet".
Another viglet favoring "settling for" the bar point is what might happen if he's eventually more or less forced (the alternative being to break his prime in some seriously distressing way) to leave the anchor with one checker, but without hitting. Then it will be easier for us to contain his straggler by attacking and forcing him back to a point from which there is no direct escaping number. From there, we may win a prime vs. prime game, and it will be a big advantage, not just a viglet, that we own the cube.
