Backgammon is not chess!

If the entry fee were only, say, $50, with maybe a $20 registration fee to help ensure the TD doesn't end up going flat broke, I find it reasonable to think it could draw more players who live in driving distance to the venue. But would anyone fly (yeack!) or drive a distance that doesn't allow for commuting, and so then have to pay for at least two nights in a hotel, in order to play in such an event?
If instead the entry fee is $200 (low by current ABT standards) there is at least some chance the long-distance player can come out ahead, or at least win enough that the tourney is a cheap vacation. If instead they lose, they are out only another $130 to $150, which isn't a large percentage of what they spent on the event.
I don't know if this is the way players traveling a long distance will see it, but I imagine at least some will, and that will keep them away. If that effect is balanced out by a sufficient number of additional locals, the TD will get enough people to make it worth running the event, but I can certainly understand why TDs are not rushing to make such a bet.
