From standar practices of bookies, if someone does not participate to an event due to an illness etc. then the bets that are placed on him are considered void. Such bets are refunded. This is a very common practice with bookmakers. It might be that the chance of a "force majeure" situation as described in the paragraph you cited, is significantly higher than usual for this backgammon event. However it is very possible that the bookmaker does not understand this, or most likely it understands that this is the case, but it does not care that the possibility is higher. Both ways, it will not lose money. Most likely, you will also be able to bet that a player not listed will win the event. Of course, the options available and the terms of betting depend solely on the bookmaker and no one else expect the bookie and the one who will decide the odds for each player will know how things work.
