Two down strips the midpoint, and we're already split. Two factors against one of the normal opening plays.
22/15 looks weak even when it works, 22/18 13/10 should be better because it controls more of the board. It also is likely to provoke some action, and we have more to gain from a hitting contest than White, given that White has only one man back and she'll be losing more pips when hit.
Comparing 24/20 13/10 (S) and 24/21 13/9 (Z):
Looking at that lot, I prefer 24/21 13/9.
- S covers the nine point to hinder White's escape, but that will only be a benefit on White's 62.
- S puts lots of chequers 2 apart, so many of our good numbers are likely to be duplicated.
- Making the nine point would be better than making the ten point.
- The twenty point would be a better anchor than the 21, and covers more of the outer board.
I think the best play is either 24/21 13/9 or 22/18 13/10. I'll take the former.
