It is your personal choice. No one can really help you. A few things are common: Checker size not below 4,5 cm. If you have a closed board, maximum left space to the boarder 5 mm. No noise with the tumbling dice. A plain surface.
Pictures are not recommended. You have to see and to feel. Haptic is important. As i bought my board ( A Plaspel italian board, black/red leather tongues inlay, gray suede playing surface), i looked in the internet at A&K, then drove to Kassel, looking at the boards. Peronally, i was disappointed from the crisloid boards.
My question was: how many times i will buy a backgammon board? After buying a 100€ board, playing it down in three years, i took a little bit more money in the hand. After 25 years, i still play the Plaspel.
If you buy a plastic bento box, o.k. But a magewappa will be still used by your son. And my edc is a spiderco police with G-10 handles.
