I think this is a fair assessment. I'd personally go further, though, and say that in most cases your statement holds even if you drop the words "by gambling." I've spent a fair amount of my life doing things that some might consider "socially useful," such as teaching, volunteering for churches and nonprofit organizations, doing anti-terrorism work for the government, and so forth. I'd say that about 90% of the time I'd be kidding myself if I thought that I was doing something socially useful. (Paradoxically, I think that taking in stride my 90% uselessness helps me be only 90% useless and not 95% or 100% useless.)

For that reason I'm not sure that gambling is that much more socially useless than most other things. It's a matter of degree of course.
