No Bob. There is good scheduling because when there are enough people, entry fees, association support and sponsorship money, there can be enough good staff hired to make sure everything runs smoothly. Clocks in the main events and doubles is just one of the things that helps keep tournaments on schedule.

Right now, we are not catering to families and children and beginners for several reasons, but the main one is we don't get enough of them to come in the first place. But if they did come, are we set up to provide things of interest to them? This must be planned, carefully, and scheduled, and most tournaments are too short-handed to do this. I don't blame them, there is only so much money and few volunteers.

In San Antonio, I was paid to give two seminars to beginners, and we had a lot of beginners, but while one seminar was fairly well attended and the other hardly at all, it was because they were both scheduled at the last minute. It was an after-thought. Next year, we'll do better....Bill Riles and Tara and I have learned from our mistakes and will make sure the beginners get what they were promised.

My vision of the future is a professional staff of highly experienced people not only promoting and running the tournaments, but setting up sightseeing and special events for families to encourage more people to come. Again, with enough people, there will be proper funding to do this.

If I have learned anything from many years of working in volunteer organizations, I have learned that you can't rely on volunteers for everything and that you need money to make it work. If I have learned anything from running for-profit organizations, I have learned that they are short-sighted, selfish, highly profit-oriented, and lack vision for the overall good of the game or industry. They exist for their own profit and egos.

To be a success, you need both, and they need to work together. We are moving in that direction, but a few individuals and groups hinder the progress, and many of YOU simply sit back and criticize or simply don't care, while a few of you actually do something about helping. My goal in this thread was NOT to criticize or condemn and not to brag that I am trying to help (I am, and I am proud of it to what extent I can help promote the game, and that is part of my motivation for volunteering). My goal is to get more people excited about the possibility of a much larger backgammon community that is more fun for all of us and our families and friends and to be more supportive and active. No hidden agenda here at all.
