How many pro BG players?

I absolutely agree with your statement, Tim, but I think that's the wrong analogy.
If you are an equity-up gambler, betting on line against anonymous opponents, you ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE that you will be taking "full advantage" of some fraction of them who cannot afford to lose. Your profits will always be tainted.
If you play live, you can exercise your judgement and compassion in every case (which I believe was Joe's point), making sure that your opponents can afford to lose and, if they overdo it, allowing them to stiff you. True, you could also be an "unconscionably evil" exploiter of those opponents (your analogy, I think) but I am not advocating that: quite the opposite.
The right analogy, I think, is between buying your food at a non-transparent supermarket chain and taking the trouble to shop in local stores which stock local produce where you can actually examine the conditions under which the farmers and store employees are working.
My original point, by the way, was not that it is right to ruthlessly exploit addicts: it was just addictions of various sorts (or obsessions or passions) are what make the world go round. Gambling is no more guilty of pandering to them than the many industries I listed, which all do their best (in a capitalist economy, it would not be allowed under communism) to hook their customers on their (often entirely useless) products.
