In regards to your sports betting analogy, the degree of harm you cause matters to me. To participate in a process that you know will have a direct harmful impact on someone that you can see and feel is different than being among a large pool of people aligned on one side of a sports bet(s) that may potentially cause harm to an individual or individuals aligned with a large pool of bettors on the other side. Selection is also an issue. You can control what you do to the opponent in backgammon, but you have no choice of selecting your specific opponents in the sports betting situation.
I respect people that gamble for a living. It is a hard way to make a living and it takes intelligence and discipline to be successful. But, I do not respect gamblers(pros) that target individuals that have a gambling problem and try to take them for so much that the person, their lifestyle, and potentially their family is put under severe hardship or duress.
The people I enjoy winning from are those that play for entertainment or competition and can afford their losses and keep them under control, which is what I have found the majority of backgammon players do. It is a reasonable entertainment expense for them, not a potentially life changing one.
