Neil, I wouldn't touch Vista with a ten-foot pole. XP is plenty stable enough now for me, and performs all right on today's uber-hardware. You should be able to get new hardware somewhere with XP preloaded, or at worst with nothing preloaded where installation might be a minor headache but no more. You can shoot for a later release of Vista in a couple of years after the nastier bugs and features have shaken out.
