Vista licensing can be pretty expensive depending on the configuration, number of machines, etc. Worse than XP, I've heard, which in turn must be worse than Windows 2000, oldest known stable Windows setup (though some would argue NT qualified).

As for automatic XP updates, that can be disabled. I haven't gotten any for a long time. Once I get a stable setup, I don't want any updates unless it's something critical, like a patch to a security problem.

Whenever I've bought anything preinstalled, the OS licensing terms were spelled out. It's been a long time since I've wanted to install an OS on any computer I've owned, so I don't know what typical terms are now. I prefer to let somebody else install my OS (with Windows, takes a long time and I don't trust the process to be seamless). I've never had a problem finding somebody who'd be willing to sell me a PC with a custom installation. There are all kinds of people who advertise specialized services, they'll build you a system and give you a maintenance contract, or sell you a kit and charge you a little for support, or just sell you components so you can do everything yourself. But then I'm in Boston area, high-tech mecca, lots of options within a 50-mile radius. Indiana U. ought to attract plenty of that, it seems.

Bottom line: Avoid Vista if at all possible. I saw a demo last year sometime and I was appalled.
