Final Report on Snowie on Linux

OK, probably no one else on the board is that interested in this but just in case it ever comes up again the information is here.

I was able to get the Snowie 4.5.2 demo to run on the latest Crossover. It took me a while to figure out the user interface but in the end I think everything works. Saving and loading games and doing rollouts (I wasn't able to figure out how change the settings in the rollout but I think that was my fault and not the program's).

There is a slight problem and it's with the graphics. The 3-D boards do not work, they just don't show up. The 2-D boards work just fine. However, the checker animations do not work either as the checkers just magically appear where they are supposed to be (I assume it should be otherwise).

Also, when it is my play I assume that there should be a way to see what Snowie recommends for me (like the "Hint" function in Gnubg) but I could not get it to show me anything. I had to make the play then it would evaluate the position. But then I could go to the explorer window, choose the move, and select "play from here" as a work around. Surely that's not the best way to do it.

So on Linux you can play Gnubg natively, BGBlitz (though it's Java which sometimes has its own problems), Jellyfish without any problems (but at this point why would you?), and Snowie with some slight annoyances. But for the time being at least Gnubg is definitely the best choice for Linux especially with its support for multi-processors.
