NewGnu 4-Ply v NewGnu 4-Ply [...] Using the default 2-ply filtering of 8 moves within 0.16 for NewGnu the correct move doesn't make it past 0-ply

Something is wrong here.

If you use the predefined "4ply" setting, you get a move filter larger that that (advanced settings shows plies:4, move filter:large).

Only if you start with predefined "world class" (plies:2, move filter:normal) and crank up the plies will you get the setting you describe, but then it is "user defined", not the standard 4ply...

Evaluations deeper than 2ply are so expensive compared to the former that it seems really misguided to scrimp at evaluating a few more candidates at 2ply and risk getting stuck with 0ply on anything but the most obvious plays. This is the reason the predefined grandmaster (3ply) and 4ply settings use a large move filter.
