For what it's worth, I personally use move filters, slightly different than the default ones, that force a minimal number of moves to be evaluated at more than 0ply.

Instead of the default of "8 moves within 0.16", I use "always 2 moves and up to 6 more within 0.16", and similarly "always 4 and up to 12 more within 0.32" for the large one.

This is only about 5% slower on average, avoids some accidents of the kind Michael had, and, even if the best move is obvious, having it evaluated at a higher ply means the equity and wins, gammons, etc... shown for it in the analysis panel are generally more accurate.
