Backgammon NJ does online pretty well. It doesn't encourage "community," but it will match you with someone similar to your ELO and desired match length. Matches aren't clocked but they tend to move quickly, and you get have a choice to reject games before they start (e.g. if someone has a high "dropped games" percentage, you don't have to accept the match).
