In order to decide whether an improvement has been made, one needs to have a clear idea of what the goal is. This is especially true once you start fiddling around with minutiae.

For example, I remain unconvinced that PR is an "improvement" over Snowie ER. The only real value that either of them has in my book is as a quick-and-dirty measure of whether I'm making progress in my study of the game. For that purpose, almost anything reasonable will do. Trying to force ER/PR to do more than that is just a misguided endeavor IMO.
