Reading Stick's post reminds me that I forgot to comment on Bob's second question. If two rollouts disagree then it's still possible to do something, although it takes a lot of work. The basic strategy is the same as in a courtroom when two eyewitnesses disagree: You cross-examine them. This means coming up with a story for what is going on, and testing it by varying the position and by examining the upcoming decisions. Typically the bots will agree on most things but will disagree on some crucial points. These points can then be subjected to further scrutiny, for example by rollouts. Often you'll be able to identify some play(s) that the bot changes its mind about upon rollout, and you can eventually use this procedure to piece together a consistent story about the position and where the bot(s) went wrong during the initial rollout.
