In Response To: handshake (Donby)

I don't consider myself to be an "ambassador" of the game or an ambassador of anything but myself, and I have what I consider to be a very strong code of ethics relative to fair play and good sportsmanship and do my best to demonstrate both.

I never complain about the dice or luck. Ever. I consider that to be not only tiresome, but also insulting to my opponent's skill...no matter how good or bad he plays. I never point out my opponent's errors unless asked, or unless it is a student of mine.

When I lose, it is ALWAYS with grace and, if I truly believe my opponent played well or courageously and demonstrated good sportsmanship, I will thanks him and compliment him appropriately and wish him luck in the rest of the tournament or future matches.

When I win, I never gloat and point out my opponent's mistakes and I don't call my opponent's bad rolls and I don't cheer or celebrate when I roll well.

When I sit down at the table, either on line or live, I always greet my opponent in a friendly way.

If my opponent takes a long time to make a move, I am patient and considerate and I am very considerate myself not to take too long.

But I DO NOT CHOOSE TO say thank you or good match at the end of every match because I don't think that has any real meaning and I won't say good match unless I think my opponent truly played very well, and I won't say thank you unless I am truly thankful for the way my opponent played and conducted himself.

And I do not tell others how they should behave, unless they are rude or out of line.

So for you to tell me that I am not being appropriate because I don't share your particular values, again, is, in my opinion, out of line and not appropriate. You are entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. Why can't you respect the fact that I not only don't share your opinion but I don't think it is appropriate for you to judge me because I don't share yours? If you like to say thank you at the end of every match, go right ahead. I won't tell you that you are wrong to do it. I am telling you not to tell me I am a bad ambassador of the game because I don't share you particular views on this issue.
