There's an old joke that asks, what's the difference between theory and practice?

Well, in theory there is no difference between them.

But in practice, there is.

I think that the doubling decision is trivial in practice but I wouldn't call it trivial in theory. It wasn't obvious to me at a glance and although I probably could have worked it out if I had felt like it, I still don't think it's trivial.
