Well, this is apparently one of the reasons that Nack Ballard doesn't want his matches recorded. That such a "scouting report" would be valuable is also Stick's contention, though as you'll see from that thread, not everyone is convinced that access to a large supply of someone's games would help you beat them, since there's so much randomness in backgammon.

In chess, everyone has grown accustomed to the public availability of matches and the information about one's weaknesses that they provide. It's really not so devastating even in chess, where there is no systemic randomness in the game, because as compensation for revealing your own weaknesses you get to see other people's weaknesses.
