I imagine it must be hard to convince folks to pay a yearly membership fee when there are several free options available; the only essential perk of the paid site seems to be the clock option.

Back in the dark ages when I was playing chess online, the biggest site was ICC by far. It is premium, but they gave free membership to GMs and IMs, I believe; there were regular simuls run by GMs and IMs and free to enroll for members, live GM commentary of major tournaments, etc. You did indeed see what you paid for.
