Best way to improve your BG?

I wrote about this for GammonU back when it had its old name, but you can still find it in the archives there: "How To Study Your Own Matches"
In the final section on how to get "extra-terrestrial credit", I recommend what you are saying in your post. Here is part of that section:
8. If there is still a significant difference between the best play and the second choice after the rollouts, determine what features of the position are most important. Do this by changing one feature at a time and seeing what effect it has on the play selections.
9. Propose a general principle governing the type of play you have just studied. If possible, come up with one or more radically different positions where you think the decision should be similar, based on your new principle, because the key features are similar to those of the position you studied. Ask the bot if it agrees.
Most of the article describes how to study using JellyFish 3.0, which is what I was using in Sept. 2000 when I wrote it. I now also have Snowie and GNU, which allow batch processing--JF does not. In a way, that was good for me since I had to look play-by-play and didn't have the option to just flip from error to error. Other parts of the article explain how to get the most information you can from your favorite bot.
If you aren't a member of GammonU, you can also find a copy of my article here
