Counting shots and blots is one thing, but how do you quantify an ugly on the acepoint?
You don't. It all comes down to judgment :) I can hardly claim I've come up with a way to solve backgammon by counting shots. But other things being equal, in a close race like this, the number of shots is pretty important, and I think maybe people don't pay as much respect to this as they should.
The ugly on the acepoint is bad, yeah, but not THAT bad, in my judgment. It's not like we're bearing in a prime against a back game, we're playing a holding/racing/attacking/what, for lack of a better term, I will call "early" game. The liability on the 11 point, however, is that bad. I'd rather just play 6/3* and pick up my dice and leave 3 more shots and lose 2 pips in the race, but that's not exactly legal.
I really do think an important aspect of this is that putting the man on the 3pt on the bar leaves sickening sixes for you opponent. Maybe if I get some free time a 2ply of all plays...
That's true too, though putting the man on the 7pt on the bar leaves even worse sixes for your opponent. 13/8 is probably going to be close in these kinds of positions, but putting the guy on the bar is big.
