Candidates considered: 13/8, 6/3*/1, 8/3*, 10/7* 10/8

Anything that does neither hit nor play safe is out. There is only one plausible safe play, 13/8, which isn't too bad at all - there is always something to said for letting the other guy clean up. Then we need to find the best hit to compare it with and decide.

6/3* seems to go with either 3/1 or 8/6. 6/3*/1 misplaces a checker but leaves only 11 shots and a better 8pt 6pt distribution. 8/3* leaves 14 shots and a stripped 8 point, and quite frankly the 3 pt is not the ideal point to slot anyway - so 6/3*/1 seems better (BTW 6/3* 10/8 leaving another blot and even more shots and duplication just for duplication's sake is out too, better distribution cannot be that important)

10/7* seems to go only with 10/8. Once the point is broken we cannot leave the 2nd blot and the extra shots, and there is no other 2 that doesn't compromise our position further. 10/7* 10/8 leaves 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, 22, 16, 25 for 14 shots as well, but leaves the checkers in good places, and steals 4 more pips. The drawback is the loss of the 10 point, but I think it is worth it over 6/3*/1.

Whether it can compete with the safe play? I think it can. The upside seems to be greater, my flexibility in choosing gameplans greater, and my racing edge a bit greater if it comes to racing. The slight lead in match shouldn't matter much, either.

I go 10/7* 10/8
