... so I am not allowed to use my gut instinct, which is to hit in a split second before the brain kicks in?

The alternative must be 13/11 8/4 allowing blue to play. Then blue has good 5's (very good 54 and 55, OK 51 52 53 56), and some bad 6's (16 26 36 46). After the hit blue has good 2s (very good 21, and very good if white dance, not so good if white hits back), bad dancing numbers (3-6 combos). Blues 2-hits are probably better than the 5-partial escapes, but the dances are pretty costly, and there are more of them than the bad 6's after the temporizing play. I think I let my brain side with the gut feeling on this one.
