As Sam Pottle once said, "you have to make the right play, and just accept that it may still punish you".

So, make the right play, dont mess around with crappy alternatives. Stick to your guns. If he rolls the 61, just say "oh well, he hit me." and roll one right back at him.

You cannot change the way you think because once it bit you in the ass. How many times has it worked out fine? too many for you to recall. Play your game straight. Thats its. Live with it.
