None of our local forum heroes did any good but it was a nice tournament -- great venue and location. Beautiful weather and the hotel sticks right out into the Hudson River so the views of Manhatten are absolutely unbelieveable. I hope Howard has it again, my wife and I will definitely go back.
He had 67 championship players and 31 first round losers re-bought in, so the prize pool was fairly substantial. I think there were 40 or so intermediate players.
Mike Senkiewicz (sp?) beat John O'Hagan in the Championship Final. John led 8-3 before Mike ran off ten straight points. I think the final score was 13-10, but I walked away the last game or two. Rick Barabino beat Dion Hogan in the Masters tourney -- Dion led 9-1 or 9-2 to 11 before losing. The DMP game was unbelieveable volley of jokers and anti-jokers. Jeff Acerno (sp?) beat Antonio Ortega in the Championship Consolation Finals.
One of the most entertaining matches for all during the weekend was a match between Paul Magriel and Bill Robertie in the third or fourth round of the main -- Robertie got out big early but Magriel came back to win the match. He then lost to O'Hagan.
One interesting sidenote. Senkiewicz lost in the first round of the championship and bought back in; however, when he bought back in he opted not to re-enter the side pool. So, O'Hagan won the $5,300 side pool; which was about the difference in first place and second place. I don't know if they hedged at all, but, if not, they cashed for just about identical money.
My play was typically inconsistent and, seemingly, I generally play up/down to the level of the competition. I won a great match in the first round of the Masters against Ed O'Laughlin and then lost to someone I'd never heard of in the second round. I had a good run in the consolation of the main including a win over Kit Woolsey but got knocked about by Boris Dektyar after leading 8-5 Crawford.
Stick was totally snakebitten. In the second round of the main he led Charlie Yacoby (sp?) 11-5/13 (having narrowly missed a gammon which would have given him a 13-5 win) and then couldn't buy a roll thereafter. Then, in the Consolation, he led a guy 8-1 Crawford and saw nothing thereafter, losing a brutal doubled gammon for the match -- see earlier post. I told him he had what we in Texas sometimes call 'buzzard' luck -- he couldn't kill anything and he couldn't find anything dead.
More later. I'm sure Stick may have some interesting positions -- all heartbreakers, no doubt.
On to Charlotte next weekend.
