I think it is pretty clear that he was paranoid and had a persecution complex, or he wouldn't have dropped out of chess at the top of his game and instead would have cashed in on his fame. Only then would it have been rational to drop out of society. What Fischer did instead was drop out, become homeless for a couple of decades, and blame it all on the Jews.

Not exactly the actions of someone playing with a full deck. Evil? No. Seriously messed in the head? Yes.
