GNU 2 ply has my play as a near whopper...

Either you or GNU must be seriously misplaying this, because I'm playing 5/o 5/4 with no second choice...preferred by a long margin, a lot more than whopper range.

and is seven checkers back too many? Would you stop at say 3 or 4 here?

For money, no. Backgammons probably outweigh losses by enough. At the score, maybe? I'm not great with those tricky match score decisions. I'd need to look at a position, of course. I'd much sooner hit Blue off his 18 point than the 3 point. But it doesn't look like the gammon is completely assured here anyway even if you don't get hit, so I'd probably hit as many as I could.
