We must choose between making the five point and hitting with 13/9 8/7*.
Playing 9/5 8/5 makes the best point leaves no shots allows White to anchor or escape with many rolls unstacks the five point
White 161
Blue 167 Position ID: sOfgADLgc/BBIA Match ID: MAHgAdAAYAAA
Playing 13/9 8/7 makes a decent point leaves 14 shots allows White to anchor or escape with many rolls hinders White's forward development gains six pips to level the race puts a tenth chequer in the attack zone Blue often has the choice to hit or make the five with a 2nd roll 31.
Differences in this position are that
Blue can make a point (favours hitting) White hasn't brought a builder down so has less threat to make a point on his side (favours the 5-point) Blue has more men back already, so a fourth hurts less (favours hitting)
White 168
Blue 167 Position ID: 4GvDADLgc/ABUA Match ID: MAHgAdAAYAAA
On balance I slightly prefer to hit. At the score, where we should prefer the gammonish play somewhat, so hitting is more attractive. I choose 13/9 8/7*.
I've got a new book recently. Can you guess what it is yet?
