Thanks for the supplementary analysis. I should have spotted the stack and lack of covers for the bar point. Retaining a spare on the eight was another feature in favour of pointing that I missed.

The rollout shows that Blues gammons are about equal after either play, as Phillipe suggested. I'd have thought that allowing White to anchor or escape one man would reduce gammons. However, I suppose that making a decent board is a prerequisite for gammons, so any later hits will be more effective.
