I think we must come up to the 18 point, with 21 and 3 a second choice.

We're now playing some form of holding game. I think it's advisable to be at least as far advanced as your opponent. The eighteen versus the twenty-one point represents six pips of timing, and in an even race could be the difference in who has to leave the first shot.

Making the three point is nice but not crucial; there are no chequers to contain yet, and it strips our six point.
