Chess is Life

When I was in my teens and 20s, my powers of concentration and particularly of memory were much better than they are now. I was 15 when Fischer gave that exhibition and had been playing chess seriously for a few months. At that time I could remember just about every chess game I'd ever played, and for the next few years it was the same story. That exhibition game might have been burned into my brain with the benefit my younger capabilities.
I find it much easier to remember chess games than backgammon games. In chess, you plan all your actions, and you have to look ahead in order to succeed. In backgammon, looking ahead is harder, so there are fewer cues to use to remember what happened. Usually, if I remember the roll I'm fine--but I can't always do that.
Now, I can often reconstruct a backgammon match if I make the attempt immediately after playing. But hours later may already be too late. A chess game, on the other hand, would linger in my mind for days or weeks.
Now let's see, where did I put my keys....
