OTB and in analysis mode the original and the variant in my opinion are candidates for saving sixes. As someone said if you over think these positions the obvious can elude one. Pressure is put on the opponent as it produces more indifferent rolls. Roll outs confirm the fact that saving sixes is best. Unfortunately they do not tell the whole story. Make the plays then check the dice distributions. In the case of the variant there is a dramatic difference despite the small difference in equity. If one is not sure if its best to save sixes then perhaps it makes sense to safe them.

If your not sure if its a cube then cube. Not that I give that theory credence in this day and age.
